Coming Together by Frederic Rzewski
The fiercely political American composer Frederic Rzewski (pronounced ZHEF-ski) wrote Coming Together after becoming obessed with a letter that was published in The New York Times. The letter, which is the source of the text in the piece, was written by activist and revolutionary Sam Melville, a prisoner in the Attica Correctional Facility who was the principal conspirator and bomb setter in the 1969 bombings of eight government and commercial office buildings in NYC. Melville was later murdered in the Attica Prison uprising of 1971.
Performed by Katayoon Hodjati, flute and piccolo; Jennifer Everhart, clarinet; Brian Sacawa, baritone saxophone; Dana Jessen, bassoon; Michael Sheppard, piano; Phil Kiamie, marimba; and Erik Spangler, vocals & KAOSS pad.
?Corporel by Vinko Globokar
Corporel means "of the body," which is fitting for this piece because the "percussionist" doesn't play any percussion instruments, but rather plays himself. The score directs the performer to, among other things, "strike the 'bony' parts of the body (skull, collarbone, etc.) with the fingertip," "clack teeth," and to "strike the pit of the stomach."
